"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace." Rom. 6:14
The Law strengthened sin by producing guilt that condemned us and also brought the wrath of God against our sins:
"Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression."
Rom. 4:15
However, once we accept the atonement of Christ for our sins, we no longer need to fear the wrath of God; that was placed on Jesus. We also don’t need the Law to condemn us and kill us. We have already come to Christ for salvation, which is what the Law was designed to do:
"Why the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Gal. 3:24
The Law was declared to be our “schoolmaster,” bringing us to Christ so that we might be justified by faith in Him. A schoolmaster is the one who supervises the life and morals of the child until he or she reaches maturity by strict enforcement of rules and regulations.
So, until Christ came, the Law was like someone trying to make us behave. The Law presented to us true holiness, in order for us to realize that it is something we cannot achieve on our own. This prepared us for the message of Christ bringing salvation as a gift. We now relate to God on the basis of what Christ has done for us and our faith in Him:
"But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster."
Gal. 3:25
